Why is Retinol Good For My Skin?

RetinolRetinol is a vitamin-A derivative that has been proven to boost collagen production, speed cell turnover and unclog pores. What this means is a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, a more even and brighter skin tone, less acne and smaller pores.

If you had to choose one anti-aging product to start using after the age of 30, retinol should be your product of choice! SkinMedica makes a fantastic line of Retinols that are powerful enough to make a change but contain buffers and emollients to reduce any harsh side effects of some Retin-A products. It is never too early to keep fresh new skin cells rapidly growing and decrease the dull dead skin cells that tend to linger on our skin. Stop in or call for a complimentary consultation and we can help decide which product is best for you and your skin type!

Order to Apply Facial Products

facial-cream-applyDo you ever wonder in what order you should apply your facial products?

In general think thin to thick. Usually serums go on first after cleansing. Next, any creams or lotions such as moisturizer, always followed by sunscreen. Sunscreen typically is the last product before makeup (if you use it) so as not to dilute its potency by applying things on top it.

In the evening, always apply serums first, then a cream such as retinol, followed by moisturizer.

Here’s a little “cheat sheet”:
Morning:
Cleanser
Serum
Moisturizer
Sunscreen
Makeup

Evening:
Cleanser
Serum
Cream
Moisturizer

Tips for Before & After Dermal Filler Treatments

I’m scheduled to receive Restylane (dermal filler) soon. What are some tips to make the procedure go as smoothly as possible?

The number one side effect of dermal fillers can be bruising and some swelling. To reduce the occurrence of these effects it is best to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and Aleve one week before the appointment. It’s best to also avoid fish oil, herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wort and other supplements that can thin the blood and lead to bruising.

Taking Arnica Montana pellets a few days before the procedure and eating fresh pineapple can help reduce the occurrence of bruising.

About 48 hours before the appointment avoid meals containing lots of salt or sugar as these can contribute to swelling. (No Chinese take out!) Avoid excess alcohol and caffeine as these may dehydrate you.

The day of the appointment eat a light meal before you come to avoid that woozy feeling.

No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after the procedure. Staying in and applying gentle ice or compresses to the area for 10-15 minutes once an hour until bedtime and upon awakening will go a long way to combatting any swelling.

Always ask your provider if there are any additional instructions for you to follow.

Don’t scrub your skin away!

scrubbing-facePeople often use facial scrubs, washcloths, Clarisonics (facial cleansing brushes) and more to clean their skin, many times twice a day or more!

STOP!

While some gentle exfoliation is necessary for nice looking skin, too much can turn things in the opposite direction.

Overuse of exfoliators can cause redness, irritation, increased acne, dryness and sensitivity to name just a few adverse effects. Our advice to you is to slow down!

  • Never use scrubs more than 3 -5 times a week depending on the dryness and sensitivity of your skin.
  • Use scrubs gently – don’t be too vigorous and choose a sensitive skin brush if you use a Clarisonic.
  • Consider using an AHA/BHA type product (AHA/BHA Cream) for chemical exfoliation in place of some of your scrubbing products. They are a gentler way to remove dead skin cells and give your skin a healthy glow.

FAQs of Microneedling Treatments

eclipse-micropen2What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a clinically proven treatment that, when executed correctly, produces collagen and elastin in aging skin. This is known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), a process in which microneedles puncture the skin to stimulate and manipulate the body’s natural healing properties.

Why does skin become saggy as we age?

Skin is composed of two primary layers: the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the outermost protective layer. The dermis - commonly known as the “true skin” - is the most important layer since it is home to the essential functioning components of the skin. This layer is made up of fibroblasts, which are primarily responsible for producing collagen and elastin.

Collagen makes up 70% of the dermis and plays a vital role in the cohesion, elasticity and regeneration of skin. At the average age of 35, almost half of the collagen that we were born with is lost. As a result, degenerative skin changes can become visible. As the skin ages, it begins to lose its firmness and elasticity, but it CAN be rejuvenated!

How can skin be rejuvenated?

During the process of microneedling, small micro-channels are created in the skin to activate the body’s natural healing response. During the regeneration cycle, the body intensifies the release of growth factors within the deeper layers of the skin. As a result, collagen and elastin production is accelerated to heal the wound, which builds new layers of healthy skin cells.**

What process is used at ESCC?

At ESCC we use the Eclipse MicroPen and recommend a series of three treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart.

Is there any downtime with a Microneedling treatment?

Downtime is minimal – most experience pink/redness to the skin on the day of treatment – returning to normal within 24-48 hours. This treatment is fine to do during the summer months with the daily use of good sunscreen!

FAQ’s about Microdermabrasion Treatments

2011-couple-edited_dreamstime_8378777What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation that physically sloughs off dead skin cells. During this painless process a wand with a coarse tip is passed over your skin. The wand is attached to suction, which helps keep the wand close to the skin and sucks the dead skin cells away. The result is a glowing, smooth complexion.

Is there any downtime after this process?

There is no downtime following the procedure (your skin may appear a little pink for about an hour afterwards) and it may be repeated every four weeks as desired. You may experience some dryness after the treatment so moisturizing is recommended.

How does microderm benefit my skin?

The best way to improve skin texture and smoothness is to accelerate the shedding of dead skin cells, thereby encouraging the replacement of new skin cells. Microdermabrasion encourages the production of new skin cells, stimulates collagen growth under the skin, and removes debris from the pores helping to decrease pore size.

Can anyone do have a microderm treatment?

Men and women, teens and adults can all benefit from a microderm. Individuals with severe acne or rosacea should avoid this treatment as it may flare their condition, however those with mild acne will benefit from a microderm.

What You Need to Know About Collagen Production

middle-aged-woman-beautiful-skinWhat is collagen?

Some people refer to collagen as the glue that holds the body together. Think of collagen fibers as a chain-link fence. Now imagine those links rusting and falling apart; and as the links break, the fence falls. As we age our collagen production decreases resulting in sagging, crepe-like skin. In addition, fibroblasts (collagen producing cells) decrease their production of new collagen.

Once the importance of collagen in the skin is understood it is easier to understand why stimulating collagen production is the key to any good skin care and anti-aging regimen.

What can I do to stimulate collagen production in my skin?

Almost any treatment that signals a disruption in the skin cells of the body triggers an increase in collagen production; the more disruption, the greater the increase in collagen production. Heat-inducing treatments such as lasers and Pellevé top the list, but even milder treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and IPL increase collagen production. In fact, in 2007 researchers reported that wrinkle-fillers such as Restylane promoted new collagen growth.

Can products help increase collagen?

Yes! Many products are up to the task. Retinols (Retin-A) are great at increasing cell turnover, thereby stimulating collagen production. Growth factors such as TNS Recovery Complex by SkinMedica significantly increase collagen by their reparative nature. Most importantly is the daily use of sunscreen to help prevent further skin damage and the decrease in collagen.  A great skin care regimen is very important in stimulating new collagen production.

We offer a variety of services that will help stimulate collagen production. Let us help you determine the best skin care regimen for you! Contact us at www.enhancedskincare.net to schedule your complimentary consultation.

FAQ about Laser Hair Removal

ESCC-hair-removalWhat is Laser Hair Removal and does it really work?

Just as there are many different types of computers and cell phones there are many different hair removal devices. At Enhanced Skin Care Center we use Intense Pulsed Light or IPL technology for hair removal and yes it really does work!

How does it work?

A computerized base is combined with the appropriate sized hand piece and the light is pulsed over the area where you would like hair removed.  This light energy penetrates into the hair follicle and heats it up so that the hair follicle dies off. After a period of 10 -14 days the hair is expelled.

Can I do one treatment or do I need to schedule a series of treatments?

Because hair grows in cycles, a series of treatments is needed. The hair that is removed during treatment is in the active growth phase. Under the surface of the skin are more hair follicles in the resting or latent phase – not yet growing to the surface. The amount of time between treatments has been determined by research into the length of time between the active and resting phases of the hair. For example hair on the face is typically treated about every four weeks, hair on the legs can be treated every 6–8 weeks.

Is this a treatment that has any side effects?

This treatment is typically very well tolerated because the strength of the energy delivered can be titrated to the patient’s comfort level. The individual does not have to endure embarrassing hair during treatment – you may shave or clip the hairs as often as desired – just no waxing or threading as these procedures remove hair from the very follicle we want to target.

Are the results permanent?

Sticking to the schedule and not missing treatments brings optimal hair reduction.  Hair that is removed will be gone permanently although the body is always growing new hair. So there may be some regrowth over the years although the amount will never be as much as before treatment and the hair will be finer. Hormonal fluctuations such as pregnancy or menopause may influence the amount of hair regrowth but typically a few touch up visits brings the growth back under control.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for IPL treatments?

A quick consult with the nurse will help you determine if you are a good candidate for IPL Hair Removal.

FAQ about Chemical Peels

chemical peels at ESCC“I would like my skin to look & feel smoother.”
“If only my skin tone and texture were more even I could wear less make-up.”
“I just want my skin to look better!”

These are some of the common statements heard everyday in our office. Most women would be happy if their skin looked smoother, less dull and more youthful, yet most don’t realize that it’s not as difficult nor as expensive as one may think to achieve.

What can I do to get better looking skin?

The hallmark to great looking skin is a regimen that promotes the exfoliation (shedding) of dead skin cells and the regeneration (growth) of collagen and new skin cells. Think about it…if you do nothing to get rid of old dead skin cells they simply lie on your face and give your skin a dull or ashy appearance. Your body has no encouragement to manufacture fresh new skin cells to replace the old ones. And because your skin is not being stimulated, the production of collagen under the skin slows down.

What is the best way to stimulate the skin?

One of the best ways to safely exfoliate your skin is through chemical peels.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are really just a form of exfoliation – a minimally invasive and essential component of facial rejuvenation. Chemical peels use a combination of acids of varying degrees of strength to chemically shed dead skin cells. Because of the nature of the chemicals, peels are especially helpful for acne prone skin and skin that is discolored due to sun damage or old acne lesions.

Does a Chemical Peel actually “peel” my skin?

Not all peels involve actual “peeling” of the skin.

When will I see results of my Chemical Peel?

Because the epidermis heals quickly, you will notice improved appearance of the skin, more even skin color, smoother texture and a healthier glow in just a few days. In addition there will be decreased fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth, improvement of mild scarring and acne, and a reduction of skin discoloration such as sunspots and melasma.

Does a Chemical Peel have any added benefits?

Chemical peels optimize skin health and are beneficial for all skin types, colors, and ages.

A chemical peel has both cosmetic and medical benefits:
 - Cosmetically, the exfoliation from the peel improves pore size, hyperpigmentation from sun, old acne lesions, and melasma, as well as fine lines.
Medically, a chemical peel can improve acne, benign keratoses and actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions). Peels achieve these results by removing damaged outer layers of the skin allowing a fresh, new layer of skin to naturally emerge.

Incorporating a peel into a good skin care regimen will boost the effectiveness of the products and prolong the results of the peel. We recommend a peel be followed by TNS Recovery Complex (a potent solution containing human growth factors that help enhance skin tone and texture), as well as a good moisturizer and sunscreen.

How often can Chemical Peels be scheduled?

For optimal results we recommend Chemical Peels being done in a series of three treatments spaced about 3-4 weeks apart. After completion of the series, a periodic maintenance program can be established. Maintaining the regimen is important so as not to return to dull, ashy skin.

How do I know which peel is best for me?

At Enhanced Skin Care Center we offer a variety of Chemical Peels, including the Vitalize Peel, Illuminize Peel and Rejuvenize Peel. Schedule your complimentary consultation to see which peel is right for you!

How to Apply Skincare Products for the Most Benefit

applying skincare productsThe order that you apply your skincare products, as well as the time of day, can influence the benefit you get from your regimen. For example – sunscreen applied to the face first under items like serums and moisturizers can decrease the effectiveness of the SPF.

Follow this simple routine in the morning and at night for beautiful, healthy skin:

Daytime Routine…
A general rule of thumb is to apply any serums you may use first on clean skin. Typically serums such as growth factors and Vitamin C are thin and provide the most benefit to the skin. Apply these products first to penetrate and not be diluted.

Next, apply moisturizer. If your skin is exceptionally dry, a hyaluronic acid product applied under the moisturizer will increase the efficacy of the moisturizer.

Lastly, apply a good broad spectrum SPF of at least 30 before any makeup powder or foundation. If you want to skip a step, a combination moisturizer/sunscreen is a good option as long as the SPF is 30 and broad spectrum – meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Beware of the SPF 15 moisturizer that is not broad spectrum – as it is not adequate for daily protection.

Nighttime Routine…
Before bed and after cleansing, apply a growth factor or similar product if you use it twice a day.

Next, apply a retinol product or an Alpha-hydroxy Acid (AHA) product, topping with a moisturizer if your skin tends to be dry.
- If your skin is showing signs of increased dryness from the use of retinols, applying the moisturizer before the retinol will help alleviate some of the dryness.
- If you like to use both retinol and AHA/BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) products, it is best to alternate days rather than layering these products – using the retinol about 4 days per week and the AHA/BHA the other 3 days.

This simple 2-3 step regimen should be quick and easy in the a.m. and p.m., giving your skin great benefits without taking up lots of your time!
