It’s the time of year when we start spending more and more time outdoors. It’s also time for our friendly reminder of the importance of daily use of sunscreen.
Everyone is exposed!
What to look for in a sunscreen...
For everyday use – like going to work, running errands, etc. an SPF of 25-30 is now the recommended level of protection.
If your skin is oily or normal, select an oil-free product especially made for the face to avoid that greasy feeling some sunscreens can leave behind. SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense is great option for this purpose. If your skin is dry and you need a moisturizer, then it is acceptable to get a combo product that moisturizes while providing sun protection. We carry Avene Hydrance Moisturizing Sunscreen that does double duty. Both of these products contain Zinc Oxide which is a physical blocker to the sun using a finely ground mineral without the use of chemicals. Many people find this type of sunscreen soothing and less irritating than other chemical-based sunscreens. Please note that make-up does not count as sunscreen! Any sunscreen in your foundation is considered a bonus - not the primary protection!
When going outdoors and being in the sun more purposefully – like a day at the beach or pool, sitting at a ballgame etc. you need to bump up your SPF protection to 45-50. Again – a Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide based sunscreen is preferred. Another important factor for this type of protection is being water resistant - otherwise you will sweat it off or wash it off.
Things to remember when applying sunscreen...
Use enough sunscreen to liberally cover the area and apply make-up as your last step over the sunscreen.
When using spray sunscreen for the body we recommend applying the lotion sunscreen first and then using the spray as a touch up after sweating or swimming. Too often we see people who have relied on sprays and then come in to our office burned because of areas missed by spraying.
